How to Get Hired: What social says about applicants

It’s no secret that employers turn to social media platforms when it comes to picking potential job candidates. And while those party pictures from 2010 seemed like a great way to commemorate your best friend’s birthday, they could potentially hurt your chances of getting hired in 2019. Here’s a few tips for making your social media accounts a little more potential-employer acceptable.

Do not delete your profile

While the all-seeing eyes of employers checking out your latest Facebook and Instagram posts might sound daunting, bear in mind that deleting your profile is not the way to go. Employers would rather know that you have some social media presence, especially in this day and age. Instead, you can set you profile to “private” and keep your professional profiles, like LinkedIn, clean and up-to-date. Think of your profile as an evergreen resume that anyone can check out and learn about your professional life. So it’s important to keep it relevant and looking professional.

Don’t buy fake followers

Believe it or not, employers do have tools to find out if you have fake followers. And truth be told, it doesn’t really matter how many followers that you have. Companies are looking more for quality as opposed to quantity. Instead of trying to get as many followers as possible (most of which are probably bots or fake users, try connecting with and following influencers and industry leaders in your field.

Be Active, at least a little

Being inactive on the social media sites that you’re signed up for is not a good idea. Signing up and then just leaving your LinkedIn page empty or having a poor-looking Facebook page isn’t going to make you look good. Think of social media as a marketing tool for yourself and show that you engage and network with others. Employers will be more attracted if they see that you create funny or engaging posts that spread ideas as opposed to pointless banter.

What if you’re the company looking for candidates?

For those on the other side of the table; the companies that are looking for potential candidates, going through endless profiles and social media accounts while sifting through candidates is a tough spot to be in. Finding the right person for the job goes beyond resume keywords and “About pages,” so the whole process can take up a lot of time. If you’re looking to cut down on time spent filling roles within your company, then hiring a third-party company to take on the task is recommended and will allow your company to focus more on what it does best.
